Lithium-ion Batteries: What, Why & Where to Use
Batteries are everywhere, there is no denying it. From children’s toys to TV and air conditioning remotes to portable beauty products, the range of batteries is unparalleled. And to cater to every purpose required for each device, there is a plethora of battery options available in the market. Dissecting deeper into this, the various battery types include triple A batteries, atomic batteries, alkaline batteries, dry cell batteries, mercury batteries, inverter batteries, lead-acid batteries, lithium-metal batteries, lithium-ion batteries, etc. A lithium-ion battery, often known as a Li-ion battery, is a type of rechargeable battery that stores energy by the reversible reduction of lithium ions. In this blog, lithium-ion batteries are studied in detail to understand their mechanism and significance on the tech world.
What are lithium-ion batteries?
Lithium-ion batteries are rechargeable energy storage devices that utilize lithium ions to store and release electrical energy. These batteries consist of a cathode, anode, separator, and electrolyte. Lithium ions flow through the electrolyte from the cathode to the anode during charging, storing energy. When discharging, the ions move back to the cathode, releasing stored energy to power electronic devices or vehicles. Their high energy density, lightweight nature, and ability to be recharged make lithium-ion batteries integral to a wide range of applications, including smartphones, laptops, electric vehicles, and renewable energy storage systems.
Why do we need lithium-ion batteries?
It’s simple. Lithium-ion batteries charge more quickly, hold a charge for longer, and have a better power density for more battery life in a lighter container, when compared to traditional battery technology. In addition, it pairs well with electronic vehicles – the future of transportation. Electric vehicles draw their power directly from a wide range of batteries, unlike other internal combustion engines that obtain their energy from the burning of fuel. Electric cars make use of a pack made up of thousands of separate Li-ion cells that cooperate efficiently. The principal advantage that the usage of lithium-ion batteries provides in electric vehicles is that they are safer than the alternative batteries. They are less likely to overheat in high temperatures, which reduces the likelihood of a fire starting or any fire-related accidents.
Where are lithium-ion batteries used?
Lithium-ion batteries have an unprecedented range. They can be used in electronics, toys, wireless headphones, handheld power tools, small and large appliances, electric vehicles and electrical energy storage systems. They remain the predominant commercial form of rechargeable battery, widely used in portable electronics and electrified transportation. Lithium-ion batteries are a huge improvement for EVs over traditional lead-acid batteries since they are more effective, energy dense, and lightweight. These batteries require 8 times less room and weigh 8 times less than Lead-Acid batteries. They provide the optimum balance between cost effectiveness and energy storage capacity. And if that isn’t enough, parts of Li-ion batteries may often have the ability to be recycled too.
“The adoption of lithium-ion batteries in India's EV industry is not just a matter of environmental sustainability but also presents a significant economic opportunity. The global lithium-ion battery market is expected to reach an estimated $215.9 billion by 2027, and India has the potential to become a major player in this market.” said Dev Arora, CEO and Co-founder of Alt Mobility. It is clear that electronic vehicles are paving the way for a sustainable mode of transportation that helps reduce CO2 emissions and contribute to a greener earth. And the adoption of lithium-ion batteries in EVs is the gamechanger for sustainable and econonomic growth of our country.
